Patience With The Process.

I’m on a flight to my new home, Valencia, Spain. I was just explaining to my 8-year old son Max the concept behind the phrase “hurry up and wait.”

I think the first time I heard this phrase was around 2011 when I really started working in the “digital agency world.”

I was a project manager and business digital strategist for a custom software company at the time, and he phrase was used by others in reference to sort of, well, waiting on clients for information, in between sprints of hurrying to get done the requirements they gave us.

On our way to Valencia, there was a TON of “hurry up and wait.”

I like to reflect on this in the macro as “having Patience With The Process.”

Loving the process, and understanding all of the tiniest micro details that go into creating something amazing “at a high level” is what fascinates and drives me on a daily basis.

Take our move to Valencia, for example. It began on a macro level on our honeymoon, when Kate and I traveled to Australia and were on a bus in New Zealand touring the north island.

We started dreaming about being able to live abroad one day.

Then, throughout the course of our careers, we made decisions that mapped to this goal.

Then, in Fall of 2017, we REALLY started to make calculated moves to make it happen, but it took literally one year to execute.

Hours of tedious research, conversations and paperwork by Kate.

A lot of hurry up and wait. Timing, Deadlines. Waiting.

The Visa Process which you can read about on her blog, Hickeys Everywhere, outlines that better than I ever could. Let’s just say it takes MONTHS, and the ability to time moves out perfectly into little windows before deadlines close, then waiting for weeks for the results.

Hurry Up.

Wait.

Now back to my son Max and I (with Kate and Samantha ahead of us on the jetway), having a conversation about how long it takes to simply get to take off in the air on a plane, after hurrying to the gate to not “miss the flight.”

Life is a flight that you’ll never miss, so you need to have Patience With The Process.

Love the process.

Love the hurry.

Love the wait.

It’s all worth it.

As this blog is being published, we’re in our new apartment in Valancia.

We’re home.

We had Patience With The Process.

But really, the process is ALWAYS just beginning; and in progress of course.

We set goals. And as we work to accomplish them, we keep setting more goals to achieve.

Some are achieved faster than others, but when you’re patient, you have no conception of time, because it’s all working for you.
