Data Driven Design

The work

Data in. Results out.

25 years of sports decisions made with data — for an NBA and WNBA franchise, a fantasy game, a varsity program and the card-market products we run every day.

The question
Price guides hand collectors tens of millions of comps and leave the decision to them. Most of those cards never make anyone money.
The data
Real eBay closing data on a hand-curated set of the top cards for the top players, plus graded-population data.
The result
Six decision screens — Movements, Raw-to-Grade upside, Top Sellers, Sale Timing, Flipper Rankings and Portfolio Sell Alerts — that rank cards by ROI and say what to buy, grade and sell.

The question
A pro franchise runs on numbers every night: box scores to the league, scouting and draft prep, tickets, sponsors and community impact.
The data
Live game data scored courtside for NBA.com and WNBA.com, scouting and draft-prep work with Basketball Operations, statistical media notes and ticket and fundraising results.
The result
Worked with Basketball Operations on scouting, draft prep and daily operations; scored games on the gamenight scorecrew; ran Detroit Shock media relations through the 2003 WNBA championship era as Bill Laimbeer's spokesperson; and as Pistons Assistant Director of Community Relations built Bowling For Kids ($100K+ a year) and a silent auction program that raised $500K+.

Basketball · 2026 – 27 season

Ravenwood Analytics

Custom basketball analytics platform · Ravenwood High School varsity

  • 11coaching screens in one platform
  • 3session types tracked: games, scrimmages, practices
  • 1card per player with his map, focus and goals

A program's Hudl stats and film, turned into action items for every player.

The question
Like most high school staffs, Ravenwood had the film and the box score in Hudl but no fast way to turn them into what each player should work on and what the team should fix next.
The data
Hudl shot charts and film, possession tags (by voice or tap), courtside play calls logged during games, rebounding charting and practice sessions, all tied to the roster.
The result
Built by Paul as assistant varsity coach: green-light shot maps by zone, shot standards and points per shot, voice-driven film tagging, a courtside play-call log synced to film, rebounding roles and a Hit Board, scouting reports, and player cards with private sign-in. Insights go out only after coach approval, and each one has to carry an action.
