Testing out some new amazing technology via an app called Anchor.fm, I was able to get my first podcast up and running recently, and deciding to interview my amazing father, Dan Hickey (@hickeygroup) for some 41+ years of perspective on leadership, coaching and education. Dan is the founder and CEO of Hickey Leadership Group, LLC, and has more than 33 years of experience as an administrator and instructor in Rochester Community Schools in Michigan.

The great John Wooden said it, wrote it and preached it, but my father says it to me all the time. I never truly understood it until recently it started to make sense under the context of making decisions to put people around you in a position to succeed, but not rushing them or ruining the moment or opportunity by jumping too fast from one thing to the next. Be quick to not miss opportunities, but don’t hurry too fast to miss something good. Reflecting on #fathersday makes me think of all the great times I’ve had with my dad and with my kids and how every moment moving forward will be treasured. This dad quote to me means be quick to make good things happen, but slow down and enjoy them when they come. #happyfathersday #dadquotes#happyfathersdayweekend #loveyoudad

I knew it would be an amazing interview. What I didn’t know is that is that we’d draw many parallels between the business world / entrepreneurship and being a principal.

The entire interview can be listened to below, and a transcription is available upon scrolling down, but here are some of the highlights/topics:

  • Why principles need coaching
  • How principles are like small business owners/entrepreneurs
  • Issues in Education Today
  • Why Colleges and the Educational world has to pay attention to entrepreneurs like Adam Braun of MissionU
  • What staying true to yourself means and how to do it
  • Mentorship and influencers

Any feedback is welcome and I’m always looking for guests for my podcast. If you’re interested in telling your story, email me at paul@datadriven.design.

Thanks and have a great day!
